“I’m here, what’s the crisis?” Bianca flies through the doorway of my apartment, wielding two giant bags of takeout. “I brought tacos because, you know, crisis.”

“Are tacos designated crisis food?” Lilly asks with a laugh. “I had no idea.”

“You better have a low-carb one in there.” Cici takes one of the bags and starts digging through it. “I’m doing keto.”

“Thanks, B.” I flop down on the couch in my living room and look around at my friends. Bianca, of course, was the last to get here after I frantically texted them begging for an impromptu girls’ night in.

I was in a full-on panic after I got home from Zachary’s house, feeling like I’m rapidly spiraling down a path of falling hopelessly in love with him again, only to be left in the dust for a career and a world and a lifestyle that I will never fit in with.

After about five minutes of trying to explain my situation to Sparkles, I decided I needed the girls. And they, of course, showed up.

“Always late, but she comes bearing gifts.” Aubrey laughs and smiles at Bianca.

“We forgive.” I nudge her and take a taco. “And, I wouldn’t exactly call it a crisis.”

Lilly laughs, waving her phone. “Your text to us literally said ‘can you guys please come over I’m mildly freaking the heck out right now.’”

“Yeah.” I shrug and take a bite of my soft taco. “Mildly.”

“So, I’m guessing date number two went…” Aubrey furrows her brow. “Terribly?”

“Terribly…well.” I sink down and grab a throw pillow, not sure if I want to laugh or cry or scream or get in my car and drive away. “I’m so scared, you guys.”

“Oh, Mer.” Cici snuggles up on the couch, picking the chicken and cheese off of her taco to make it keto or…whatever. “We get it.”

“You’re falling for him.” Bianca swings her cascades of chocolate brown hair over her shoulder and shoots me a knowing glance.

“Yeah, like, hard.” I swallow and tuck my knees into my chest. “Harder than the first time, I’m afraid. Which is why it’s just going to hurt even worse when it all falls apart and blows up in my face.”

“Okay, Debbie Downer, we’re gonna go ahead and not do that.” Lilly rolls her eyes at me as she dabs some hot sauce onto her paper plate.

“Wait…Meredith…” Bianca looks at me, her eyes suddenly wide with concern. “Did you sleep with him?”

The girls all fall silent at the completely ridiculous and unheard of idea that I, Virgin Mer Fleming, would ever even think to have sex with someone.

“No,” I say after a pause. “But I…want to. And it freaks me out, because I’ve never wanted to with anyone else. And I almost feel like I’ve been subconsciously saving it for him. Even though logically I assumed I would never see him again. How horrendously pathetic is that?”

“It’s not pathetic.” Lilly shakes her head slowly, her blue eyes glimmering. “It’s destiny.”
